Eupatorium leucolepis
Distinguishing Features: Narrow opposite leaves combined with relatively small phyllaries and disk corollas.
Habitat: wet soils, open areas, pinelands, cypress ponds.
Geographic Distribution : diploid phase is restricted to an area in Georgia of as yet undetermined extent; polyploid apomicts extend north to Maryland and west along the Gulf Coast to Louisiana .
Similar Species: Eupatorium mohrii has rounded phyllary tips and leaves that are not strictly opposite as well as buds that are pinkish before opening; E. paludicola has a long, narrow rhizome, narrower leaves, and smaller phyllaries and cypselas.
Molecular Data : samples of E. leucolepis are relatively distinctive in ITS sequence, differing from all other species by a minimum of 8 bp changes and an 11 bp indel, the closest being E. paludicola.
