Distinguishing Features: stems and leaves are glabrous or nearly so; leaves are lance-ovate .
Habitat: edge of woods, particularly in rocky areas.
Geographic Distribution : diploid phase is restricted to southern Appalachians in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia; apomictic polyploids have a wider range.

Molecular Data : samples of E. sessilifolium differ in the ITS sequence from all other species; among other changes, the presence of a "G" at the position where E. godfreyanum is polymorphic (see clickable slide) is uniquely characteristic within the genus for E. sessilifolium.
